LIVE PROJECT: SET ENSEMBLE

During their long weekend at MEANTIME, the Set Ensemble tried out new approaches to their work, and rehearsed, recorded and performed.
Founded in May 2010, the Set Ensemble is dedicated to experimental music and contemporary composition. The ensemble has a particular focus on the work of the Wandelweiser group, which is an international composers collective devoted to furthering the investigations of John Cage into the role of silence in music. The Set Ensemble comprises of Angharad Davies, Bruno Guastalla, Dominic Lash, Samuel Rodgers, David Stent, Paul Whitty, Sarah Hughes, Tim Parkinson, and James Saunders
STUDENT PROJECT: ABBIE PHILLIPS, KATIE TATTERSDILL, LUCIE BEARDWOOD

Three final-year fine art undergraduates at the University of Gloucestershire explore collaborative working in an experimental project.
This project examined how artists respond to each other, how they can be united by common concept, yet separated still by the nature of creative processes. Through the cross fertilisation of their practices new works emerged, with each artist pushing at the boundaries of their medium, exploring physical space and challenging dimensions. This project is part of MEANTIME's commitment to supporting emerging talent from the University of Gloucestershire.

MEANTIMERS attended events, spaces and artists in Cardiff, including visits to Bob Gelsthorpe at Bit Studios, Chris Brown and Cinzia Mutigli at g39 and WARP, meeting artists Freya Dooley at Warwick Hall Studios, Liam O'Connor and Christopher Holloway at Morgan Arcade Studios, Samuel Hasler at Chapter and Barrie J Davies from Kings Rd Studios, before taking in evening performances at Experimentica, and a quick excursion to Printhaus and Goat Major Projects with Richard Higlett. LIVE EVENT: BENEDICT TAYLOR and CHRIS CUNDY

Chris Cundy (bass clarinet) & Benedict Taylor (viola) performed an evening of experimental music in two halves. Firstly, a short series of compositions dating from the early-mid twentieth century to the present day: Solo With Accompaniment - CORNELIUS CARDEW; Selected Graphic Scores - LAWRENCE UPTON; Ancient Bone - MAT MARTIN; Sonata For Clarinet - JOHN CAGE. The second half of the evening was entirely improvised.
EXHIBITION: HERDI ALI

Herdi Ali's work is informed by events witnessed as a child in Iraqi Kurdistan. His prints and large-scale drawings are a form of activism, a way of activating history and agitating for change. Herdi recently completed a MA in fine art at the University of Gloucestershire.

SCREENING EVENT: WANDERLUST - Roelof Bakker and Christine Carr

Wanderlust started off as a video work by artist-photographer Roelof Bakker. The work is a chronological log of video observations recorded over a year during walks in London. There is no narrative, no panning, there are no special effects. The camera remains fixed on a tripod and operates like CCTV, always recording without permission. Each video clip is a ten second fragment of life as this unfolds in front of the camera.
Bakker wanted the project to wander and set out to invite fellow artists to follow the same approach, structure and editing process. The first artist to contribute a version of Wanderlust is Roanoke-based artist Christine Carr, who recorded her interpretation in 2012. Netherlands-based artist Jeroen Huisman is participating in 2014.

Lauded by critics and film directors as one of the all time classics of World cinema, Tokyo Story is an emotional ensemble piece built around the simple tale of an elderly couple taking a trip Tokyo to visit their grown up children.

Vicky Hodgson's practice focuses on photographic images that contest prevailing representations of women in the public realm. Throughout September Vicky talked to and took photographic portraits of women who work in the vicinity of MEANTIME, both in the workplace, in the street, and in the studio, where the women decided how they wish to be represented. RESIDENCY: WILLIAM LINDLEY

William Lindley's artistic practice explores the evolution of neighbourhoods and landscapes, uncovering and documenting aspects and processes of place informed by his background in architecture. His focus at MEANTIME has been on a vast, spatial anomaly just beyond Oxford Passage - North Place car-park. The emptied space has a well-documented past as the site of a national coach interchange, and faces a future as a retail park, but it is its current interstitial, open state, its colonies of wild flowers, and the boundary wall that both contains its integrity and resists the advancing occupation, that William documented in precise pen and ink drawings. Difference Screen is a diverse programme of international artists’ moving image that reflects on changing political geographies through people and places. The programme embarks on a world-wide journey, travelling across 20 countries over 2 years, interpreted by an evolving dialogue between artists, curators and audiences. See more here.
Difference Screen is curated by artist Bruce Allan and curator/facilitator Ben Eastop, Co-Director of Difference Exchange, and has developed through a unique and extensive network of international artists, curators and arts organisations, its routes and resources mapped and made public through this international journey.

For Future Reference is an ongoing project exploring the relationship between our present and future lives. Kathryn Ashill has for a number of years been collecting and archiving predictions made about her future through visits to fortune tellers. In Cheltenham Kathryn visited local psychics, receiving four new readings about her future which she transcribed into drawings and a performed text.

VINYL @ MEANTIME: CHARLOTTE MORGAN
a rogue antique

For one day only, MEANTIME's website homepage hosted VINYL, a Birmingham-based curatorial project directed by Andre de Jong. The work presented, a rogue antique, is a response to the closure, on that day, and eventual demolition of Birmingham Central Library. a rogue antique was commissioned by VINYL and developed with Sheffield-based artist Charlotte A Morgan.

Working with local individuals Kate Ogley attempted to register, through recorded interviews and remembered songs, facets of the migrant experience in Cheltenham, and considered what it means for an artist to engage with, and represent, the lives of others. Event photos here.

MEANTIME took part, with John Walter, in Art Flea, "part flea-market, part conceptual art experiment, and part car-boot sale" at Brunel Goods Shed, Stroud. John Walter, who last graced our presence during his unforgettable residency at MEANTIME in September 2011, presented the latest in a series of Maximalist projects, the John McCririck Memorial Bar – a hybrid of painting, hospitality and performance. During this short residency Helen developed and presented new works from recent film projects, Talmy and Going to Africa via a Machine Called a Sunbed, and produced a number of super-sized prints. The two films approach the representation of biography in very different ways but are united in the ways they negotiate the slippages between memory, time, geography and language. An exhibition of Dennis Gould's collection of original political and pop-cultural posters from the 1960's alongside a selection of Dennis's own poetic/political works in the grotto of letterpress he created. From Purgatory to Paradise: an Indulgence
25th February - 24th March 2013
During their residency at MEANTIME Ali Kayley and Dan Glaister continued their work on landscape and the moving figure producing a number of new 16mm films focusing on Purgatory: the idea, as explored in myth and ritual, as well as literature and visual art; and the place, a small copse east of Slad, near Stroud. Three miles to the north lies the hamlet of Paradise.
Ali Kayley and Dan Glaister also produced a series of Indulgences, chits of paper bearing extravagant promises sold by travelling pardoners in the Middle Ages, incorporating drawings of Purgatory and letterpressed text. RESIDENCY: GRACE ADAM

Grace Adam's work reconsiders familiar objects, the grotesque and the ordinary, seeking to plot the ambient structures that define our urban and domestic spaces.
Utilising abandoned furniture, Grace constructed an installation binding, winding, climbing, dripping, stabbing and protruding from the space. A drawing workshop explored experimental viewing and recording methods. Photos here.
